Scottish Visitor Levy calculator
Work out the Visitor Levy for a single stay — free, no account required. Enter the council, stay dates and accommodation price to see the amount due and exactly how it was calculated.
How the Visitor Levy is calculated
The Visitor Levy is a percentage charge on the accommodation portion of a stay — not the whole guest bill. Check which charges form part of the initial accommodation transaction: a host commission deduction does not automatically reduce that price. Genuinely optional extras need separate treatment. Enter a cleaning fee and tell the calculator whether it's a mandatory changeover charge or a genuinely optional extra, and it's included or excluded accordingly — leave the classification unset and it's excluded for now with a note that it needs review.
Night caps differ by council. For Edinburgh, use the actual accommodation value of the first five chargeable nights. This quick calculator estimates that share from the total when a stay exceeds the cap; if nightly prices vary, check the nightly records before filing.
If a scheme has a booking cutoff date (a transitional rule exempting bookings made before the levy started), the calculator applies it automatically using the booking date or first payment date you provide.
Unsure about platform fees? Read the Edinburgh commission guide or compare the two treatments after calculating your stay.
Worked example — Edinburgh
An eligible 8-night stay at a constant £100 per night, with no VAT, levy or extras included in the £800 accommodation price, falls under Edinburgh's 5-night chargeable cap. £500 of the £800 (5⁄8 of the total, pro-rated) is eligible. At the confirmed 5% rate, the gross Visitor Levy is £25.00.
